Chinese Herbal Medicine

Treatments in Lotus Wellness Center in Hua HinChinese Herbal Medicine is one half of what makes Chinese medicine truly shine. We refer to it as the Yin to the Yang, the yang being acupuncture. These two major components of Chinese medicine complement and balance each other wonderfully upholding two different sides of the spectrum, respectfully Yin and Yang.

In relation to each other, Chinese herbal medicine is more Yin. It nourishes the body, it replenishes body fluids, it builds blood, it harmonizes organs, it’s very much of an inside job. I think of Chinese herbs as the slower, deeper shifting in the body. Acupuncture on the other hand is the rocket ship and very Yang. Acupuncture moves Qi and energy and moves it quickly, it opens meridians, clears blockages, wakes up the organs and clears pain. I think of Acupuncture as Chinese herbal medicine’s flashier counterpart giving quick and magical results on the spot.

There are many benefits of taking Chinese Herbal Medicine
Firstly, there are many different herbs to choose from. The traditional MateriaMedica lists approximately 750 Chinese herbs. These herbs have been used for thousands of years.

Another positive aspect in Chinese Herbalism, is that it is very difficult to build up immunity to them, where in Western Medicine increasing your dosage of a medication is commonplace, it is not common in Chinese Medicine. As you change, your formula changes, by modifying (taking an herb out or adding another) your formula’s compound changes, so your body doesn’t continuously recognize the same substance and start building immunity to it. And although Traditional Western medication works very quickly it can usually only mask a symptom, Chinese Herbal Medicine treats the source of the problem and most times can cure it.

Chinese Herbs do not have to be administered for years or for life. Just long enough for the body to make the shift that is necessary to alleviate symptoms, after that you may move on to a different formula or take nothing at all for awhile. In my personal pharmacy at home, I keep many of my favorite herbs on hand for all different reasons. If I’m feeling a little bit more stress, I’ll take Jia Wei Xiao Yao San that week. If I’m feeling really tense and having a little headache, I’ll take Migratrol or if my back is bothering me a bit, I’ll add some Du HuoJiSheng Tang. And sometimes I’ll take nothing at all but my vitamins. As you change your formulas change.

Moxibustion is an alternative therapy that involves burning herbs and applying the resulting heat to specific points on the body. A technique used in traditional Chinese medicine and in Tibetan medicine, moxibustion is typically administered in conjunction with acupuncture.

Uses: According to alternative medicine practitioners, the heat generated during moxibustion helps increase the flow of vital energy (also known as “qi” or “chi”) throughout the body via certain pathways (known as “meridians”). In traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating the flow of chi is considered essential to achieving health and wellness. In fact, physical and mental health problems are thought to develop (in part) as a result of blockages in the flow of chi.

Everyone has heard of acupuncture these days, but a lot of people still don’t know about moxa (or moxibustion) – A powerful additional tool in the acupuncturist’s toolbox. Moxibustion is the technical name for the burning of the herb called moxa (Chinese mugwort) to provide heat and provide an alternative way of stimulating acupoints, channels or areas of the body.

It’s inseparable from acupuncture, and the Chinese word zhēnjiǔ, normally translated simple as ‘acupuncture’ actually means ‘acupuncture and moxibustion’. The heat from burning moxa penetrates deeply into the body, warming and nourishing the tissues. It encourages healing, improves circulation and strengthens nerves, tendons and organs.

Cupping Jar Therapy, What is cupping?

Fire dragon-moxibustionCupping is a type of alternative therapy that originated in China. It involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The suction may facilitate healing with blood flow. Proponents also claim the suction helps facilitate the flow of “qi” in the body. Qi is a Chinese word meaning life force. A famous Taoist alchemist and herbalist, Ge Hong, reportedly first practiced cupping. He lived from A.D. 281 to 341.

Many Taoists believe that cupping helps balance yin and yang, or the negative and positive, within the body. Restoring balance between these two extremes is thought to help with the body’s resistance to pathogens as well as its ability to increase blood flow and reduce pain. Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue. People use cupping to complement their care for a host of issues and conditions.

Ways Tai Chi Can Benefit Your Health

Tai chi is a form of exercise that began as a Chinese tradition. It’s based in martial arts, and involves slow movements and deep breaths. Tai chi has many physical and emotional benefits. Some of the benefits of tai chi include decreased anxiety and depression and improvements in cognition.

It may also help you manage symptoms of some chronic diseases, such as fibromyalgia, Trusted Source or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Health benefits of tai chi exercise

Tai chi is a slow motion, low-impact exercise that promotes physical and mental health and relaxation. It is practiced as an effective exercise for health through a series of flowing, graceful, gentle postures and movements. The gentle flowing movements contain inner power that can strengthen the body, improve mental relaxation and mobilize joints and muscles. Tai chi is an especially suitable therapy for arthritis because of the slow and gentle movements. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Tai chi improves balance, strength and flexibility and lowers the risk of falls. A study from the Oregon Research Institute found that tai chi improved balance and reduced the frequency of falls and risks of falling among older people.
  • Tai chi also reduces pain, stiffness and stress. Researchers from Tufts University School of Medicine noted that patients older than 65 with knee osteoarthritis who practiced a 60-minute tai chi class twice a week for 12 weeks showed a significant decrease in joint pain and stiffness compared with those in the control group. They also found the patients in the tai chi group had improved physical function, self-efficacy, depression and health status.
  • Both the Oregon and University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) researchers reported that tai chi improves sleep quality in older adults.
  • Other UCLA studies also suggested that tai chi helps people reduce high blood pressure and tension headaches.
  • For people who carry extra weight and have a hard time doing exercises without pain, tai chi can be a gentle and safe way to get moving. By practicing tai chi and making wiser food choices, people can start burning calories and losing weight.
  • Tai chi is an inexpensive, safe, non-competitive exercise. It can be performed standing or seated. Almost anyone can learn tai chi regardless of their age or physical abilities. You practice tai chi at your own pace. It requires no special equipment and can be practiced anytime, indoors or outdoors

The Health Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is a great way to work on your flexibility and strength. Just about everyone can do it, too — it’s not just for people who can touch their toes or want to meditate.
Some types of yoga are about relaxation. In others, you move more. Most types focus on learning poses, called asanas. They also usually include attention to breathing.

Yoga for Flexibility

Yoga poses work by stretching your muscles. They can help you move better and feel less stiff or tired.
At any level of yoga, you’ll probably start to notice benefits soon. In one study, people improved their flexibility by up to 35% after only 8 weeks of yoga.

Strike a Pose for Strength

Some styles of yoga, such as ashtanga and power yoga, are very physical. Practicing one of these styles will help you improve muscle tone.
But even less vigorous styles of yoga, such as Iyengar or hatha, can provide strength and endurance benefits.
Many of the poses, such as downward dog, upward dog, and the plank pose, build upper-body strength. The standing poses, especially if you hold them for several long breaths, build strength in your hamstrings, quadriceps, and abs. Poses that strengthen the lower back include upward dog and the chair pose. When done right, nearly all poses build core strength in the deep abdominal muscles. Better Posture From Yoga
When you’re stronger and more flexible, your posture improves.
